The Tools of Recovery

  1. A Plan of Eating:  A guide for nourishing our bodies and minds. We work with a sponsor or healthcare professional to develop a plan that supports abstinence and physical recovery.

  2. Sponsorship: Sponsors share their experience, strength, and hope on a one-to-one basis, helping us work the Twelve Steps of Overeaters Anonymous.

  3. Meetings:  Meetings give us the opportunity to identify with others, share our experience, strength, and hope, and find support in recovery.

  4. Telephone:  The telephone provides immediate support between meetings and helps us reach out instead of turning to compulsive eating.

  5. Writing:  Writing helps us clarify our thoughts and feelings and see patterns that may interfere with our recovery.

  6. Literature:  OA-approved literature gives insight into the program and helps us better understand compulsive eating and recovery.

  7. Action Plan:  An action plan helps us incorporate OA’s tools into our daily lives in a practical and structured way.

  8. Anonymity:  Anonymity assures us that what we share is kept confidential and reminds us to place principles before personalities.

  9. Service: Service strengthens recovery by giving back to the fellowship and helping carry the message to the compulsive overeater who still suffers.
